Windsor Plywood carries Moso bamboo flooring, panelling, and decking products. Moso is a leading brand in bamboo building materials, offering products made from Moso bamboo, the fastest-growing bamboo species used commercially. Products are available in strand-woven and horizontal or vertical grain constructions in multiple finishes.
Strand-woven bamboo flooring, which Moso specializes in, has a Janka hardness rating significantly higher than most domestic hardwoods. Standard strand-woven bamboo typically tests at 3000 to 5000 Janka, compared to hard maple at approximately 1450 and red oak at 1290. This makes strand-woven bamboo exceptionally resistant to denting and surface wear in high-traffic applications.
Moso bamboo reaches harvestable maturity in 5 to 7 years, compared to 25 to 80 years for hardwood tree species. It is harvested by cutting the culms without killing the root system, which regenerates without replanting. Moso Bamboo Products holds FSC certification for sustainable forest management, making it one of the most rapidly renewable building materials available.
Bamboo flooring is sensitive to significant humidity swings. Strand-woven bamboo is more dimensionally stable than horizontal or vertical grain bamboo but still requires maintaining indoor humidity within the manufacturer-specified range, typically 35 to 65 percent relative humidity. A whole-home humidifier is recommended in dry heating climates where central heating drops indoor humidity below this range.
Moso outdoor bamboo decking is engineered for exterior use with enhanced moisture resistance and UV protection. It performs well in above-grade deck applications. Like wood decking, it requires periodic maintenance with a recommended exterior bamboo oil to maintain appearance and protection. In ground-contact applications, pressure-treated wood or composite decking is more appropriate than bamboo.
