      Frequently Asked Questions

What types of adhesives are available at Windsor Plywood?
Windsor Plywood carries PVA wood glue in interior and waterproof formulas, polyurethane glue, construction adhesive in cartridge form, contact cement, panel adhesive, and specialty bonding products. The selection covers fine woodworking, cabinetry, subfloor installation, and structural building applications.
Which adhesive should I use for gluing hardwood boards edge-to-edge for a table top?
A standard interior PVA wood glue (Type II or better) is the correct choice for edge-to-edge hardwood glue-ups. It provides a strong, sandable bond with good working time. Apply to both mating surfaces, clamp firmly, and allow full cure time, typically 24 hours, before removing clamps and surfacing the panel.
What is the difference between PVA wood glue and polyurethane glue?
PVA wood glue is water-based, cleans up with water, and is the standard for most interior wood joinery. Polyurethane glue is waterproof, expands as it cures to fill gaps, and bonds a wider range of materials. The expansion can be a disadvantage in tight joinery. PVA is the preferred choice for close-fitting woodworking joints.
How long does construction adhesive take to cure?
Most cartridge construction adhesives reach handling strength in 30 to 60 minutes under normal conditions, but full cure takes 24 hours to several days depending on the product, temperature, and substrate. Below 5 degrees Celsius, many adhesives will not cure properly. Check the product data sheet for minimum application temperature.
Can contact cement be used for laminate countertop installation?
Yes. Contact cement is the standard adhesive for bonding plastic laminate to substrates like plywood and MDF for countertop applications. Apply to both surfaces, allow to dry to tack, then bring surfaces together. The bond forms immediately on contact so alignment must be correct before surfaces touch. Use dowels or sticks to hold surfaces apart during positioning.
