LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. It is a rigid-core, click-together plank product that is thicker and more dimensionally stable than traditional sheet vinyl or peel-and-stick tiles. LVP looks and feels more like hardwood and handles subfloor imperfections better than thinner vinyl formats.
LVP is fully waterproof. The core and surface layer do not absorb water, making it one of the few flooring options appropriate for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and below-grade spaces. Note that standing water sitting in subfloor gaps or around edges for extended periods can still cause issues, so proper installation with sealed transitions matters.
For most residential use, 6mm to 8mm provides a good balance of comfort, stability, and durability. Products with a 12 mil or thicker wear layer hold up better under heavy traffic and pet claws. Thicker planks also bridge minor subfloor imperfections more easily, reducing the need for levelling work before installation.
In many cases yes. LVP can float over existing hard floors including tile, hardwood, and laminate, provided the surface is clean, flat, and structurally sound. Check that the added height will not create issues at thresholds and transitions. Carpet always needs to be removed first.
Yes, this is one of LVP's primary advantages. The rigid core construction handles the contraction and expansion caused by Canadian seasonal extremes better than solid hardwood or standard laminate. Maintain an appropriate expansion gap at walls and transitions and LVP performs reliably through heating seasons and humid summers.
