Laminate's surface is highly resistant to scratching, fading, and surface wear, often outperforming unfinished hardwood in those specific categories. However, laminate cannot be sanded and refinished. Once the wear layer is through, the plank needs to be replaced. For durability over time, solid hardwood wins; for surface scratch resistance and daily use, laminate is competitive.
AC ratings measure abrasion resistance. AC3 is suitable for moderate residential traffic. AC4 handles heavy residential and light commercial use. AC5 is rated for commercial environments. For most Canadian homes, AC3 or AC4 provides adequate durability. Higher-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens benefit from AC4.
Standard laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof, making basements risky due to potential moisture intrusion. Some laminate products are engineered specifically for basements and include enhanced moisture protection. If you are set on laminate below grade, verify the product's moisture rating and ensure proper vapour barrier installation beneath.
Gaps are usually caused by insufficient expansion space at walls or extreme humidity changes. Adding transition mouldings and ensuring the room stays within normal humidity ranges prevents most gap issues. Squeaking is typically caused by the floor dragging on the subfloor and a thin foam underlayment usually resolves this.
Sweep or dry mop regularly. For wet cleaning, use a well-wrung damp mop and never flood the surface with water. Avoid steam mops, which force moisture into the joints and can cause swelling and joint separation over time. Use a pH-neutral laminate-specific cleaner rather than harsh chemicals that can dull the finish.
