      Frequently Asked Questions

What Osmo products does Windsor Plywood carry?
Windsor Plywood carries Osmo Polyx-Oil hardwood floor finishes, Osmo Wood Wax Finish for furniture and interiors, and Osmo exterior products including UV Protection Oil and Decking Oil. Osmo is a German brand specializing in natural oil-wax finishes derived from sunflower oil, soybean oil, and carnauba wax.
What makes Osmo finishes different from conventional polyurethane?
Osmo finishes penetrate the wood fibres rather than forming a surface film like polyurethane. This means they enhance the natural look and feel of wood rather than creating a surface coat. Osmo-finished surfaces can be spot-repaired without refinishing the entire floor, a significant practical advantage over polyurethane which must be sanded and recoated when worn.
How do I apply Osmo Polyx-Oil to hardwood floors?
Apply Osmo Polyx-Oil in a thin coat using a flat brush or Osmo flat brush applicator, working with the grain. Apply sparingly — thick coats take longer to dry and can remain tacky. Wipe off any excess after 30 to 40 minutes. Apply a second thin coat after 8 to 12 hours.
Can Osmo finishes be applied over existing polyurethane?
No. Osmo oil finishes cannot be applied over existing polyurethane or film-forming coatings. The existing finish must be sanded back to bare wood before applying Osmo. However, Osmo-finished surfaces can be re-oiled over the existing Osmo finish without sanding, which is the maintenance advantage of the oil system.
Is Osmo suitable for exterior wood applications in Canada?
Yes. Osmo UV Protection Oil and Osmo Decking Oil are specifically formulated for exterior wood applications and are suited to Canadian climate conditions. Exterior Osmo products contain UV filters and water repellents for outdoor performance. Reapplication every 1 to 3 years, depending on exposure, maintains protection and appearance.
