Mappa (also called mazer or thuya burl) refers to highly figured wood from the root burl of the white poplar (Populus alba) or related species, primarily sourced from Italy. It is characterized by extraordinary swirling, bird's eye, and irregular figure patterns across the surface. Mappa is used almost exclusively as veneer for high-end furniture surfaces, decorative panels, and luxury interior applications where maximum visual impact is the goal.

Due to the nature of burl and figured wood, mappa is primarily available and used as veneer rather than solid lumber. Solid mappa pieces are small, irregular, and often used for turning and small decorative work. Mappa veneer is used for furniture faces, drawer fronts, cabinet doors, wall panels, and luxury interior architectural surfaces where the dramatic figure justifies the premium material cost.
