LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. Unlike laminate, which has a wood fibre core that can absorb moisture, LVP has a fully waterproof rigid plastic core. LVP is appropriate for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements where laminate would be at risk. Both are click-together floating floors, but LVP's waterproof construction makes it the more versatile option across the home.
What core types are available in LVP flooring?
The two main core types are SPC (stone plastic composite) and WPC (wood plastic composite). SPC cores are denser, thinner, and more dimensionally stable under temperature changes, making them better for rooms with significant heat variation. WPC cores have a foamed structure that provides more cushion underfoot and better sound absorption. SPC is the more common choice for Canadian homes due to its stability.
How thick should LVP be for a residential installation?
For most residential use, 6mm to 8mm total thickness provides a good balance of durability and comfort underfoot. A wear layer of 12 mil or thicker provides better resistance to scratching in high-traffic areas. Thicker planks also bridge minor subfloor imperfections more easily. For light residential use such as a bedroom, 4mm to 6mm is adequate.
Does LVP require underlayment?
Many LVP products come with underlayment pre-attached to the bottom of the plank. If your LVP does not include pre-attached underlayment, use a thin 1mm to 2mm foam underlayment. Do not add underlayment under LVP that already has padding attached, and avoid thick underlayment, which causes the click-lock joints to flex and fail over time.
How does LVP perform in Canadian winters with forced-air heating?
LVP performs well in Canadian conditions because its rigid plastic core is less affected by humidity swings than wood or laminate. Forced-air heating drops indoor humidity in winter, which causes wood products to shrink and gap. LVP is far more stable through this cycle. Maintain an appropriate expansion gap at walls and transitions and LVP will perform reliably through heating seasons and humid summers.
