Chechen (Caribbean Rosewood) Lumber

Chechen (Metopium brownei), also called black poisonwood, is a Caribbean hardwood with rich, variegated colouring — reddish-brown to dark chocolate with black streaking and flame-like figure. It has a Janka hardness of approximately 2250 and a fine texture that polishes to a high natural lustre. Chechen is used for decorative furniture, turning, knife handles, musical instruments, and high-end cabinetry accents.

Chechen (Metopium brownei) is in the same family as poison ivy (Anacardiaceae) and can cause severe skin irritation in sensitized individuals, similar to a poison ivy reaction. When machining chechen, wear appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves and a dust mask. Sensitization can develop with repeated exposure even if initial contact caused no reaction. Work in a well-ventilated space and wash thoroughly after handling.

Chechen polishes to an exceptional natural lustre with fine sanding grits (220 and finer) and responds well to oil finishes that enhance its colour depth and figure. The variegated colouring becomes more vivid with a clear oil or varnish. UV-inhibiting finishes help preserve the warm red-brown tones.

Chechen is used for turned bowls and vessels, knife and tool handles, decorative box making, musical instrument components, and accent panels in high-end furniture and cabinetry where its figure and polish are appreciated. Its hardness makes it practical for objects that need to withstand handling and wear.
